My great countryside adventure...

Well, tonight ended up being my 100th ride on my Specialized Allez road bike that I've had for almost 5 years now, and what an adventure it was!!  My idea was to ride out into the countryside and get out a ways.  The problem was, as I headed east, I had a hard time finding a paved road heading south!  I finally found one, and it was a beautiful and quiet ride down to Vermillion, where I took the picture below.  I love riding out near the farmland around here, even if I get a whiff of manure every once in a while.  ;)  It was a fantastic night weather wise, too.

However, as I headed west before heading north back home, I found out that I had gone a little too far south.  :)  I started "bonking" and as I reached Robert Trail at mile 27, I had to stop briefly to collect myself, knowing that I had a good 10+ miles left before I got home, and it was starting to get late!  I put my lights on and powered back home.

The ride ended up being over 38 miles long, at least 5+ miles longer than I was planning on going!  I got home just a few minutes before 9pm, over 2 hours in saddle, but I was happy with my 17+mph average throughout the ride! 🚴

This brings me to an important part of my cycling training, the underrated hero behind the scenes, my lovely wife, Anne.  I try to get out for bike rides and not disrupt family time too much, but invariably rides like the one tonight puts additional strain on her and taking care of the kiddos at bedtime.  So far this year I've got nearly 20 hours in the saddle.  That's 20 hours away from my family, plus additional time if I'm driving down to Cannon Falls and back.

I know I wouldn't be able to spend as much time and train as hard as I do if it weren't for Anne stepping up at home! So next time you see her, thank her for all of her efforts in helping make sure I'm ready for my events!
